Fire Chief Not In Favor Of City/County Contract

Last updated on Thursday, May 18, 2006

(SPRINGVILLE) - Perry Township Assistant Volunteer Fire Chief Bill Raines is blasting the extrication contract signed recently between the city of Bedford and Lawrence County.

The extrication contract allows equipment owned by the Bedford Fire Department to remove those trapped in a wrecked vehicle such as the Jaws of Life.

The city receives $75,000 a year from the county to provide the service. Raines says the county uses the service very little throughout the year and feels that the commissioners could "save a whole lot of money and help out the county emergency services."

He says to call on the Bedford Fire Department to bring the equipment to the scene of an accident adds an extra 10 minutes removing the injured. Raines says the county needs to start reducing expenses and this contract is one of them.
