Severe Thunderstorm Causes Extreme Damage In Several Counties In The Area

(MITCHELL) - A major thunderstorm rolled through the area last night causing the most damage to Mitchell.

The stoplight at Hwy. 37 and 60 was knocked out. A 4-way stop sign was erected to control traffic. Strong winds ripped through Mitchell damaging buildings at Hoosier Uplands and Integra Bank. CVS Drugs and Dairy Queen received wind damage. A trailer was blown across the highway from Superior Small Engines. A lady at Camelot Apartments suffered a broken arm when a tree limb fell. She was taken to an area hospital treated and released. Electricity was knocked out in parts of Mitchell. Workers continue to repair the lines.

Police officials continue to receive reports of damage across the area. Lawrenceport suffered a lot of storm damage. A mobile home was overturned from the high winds. A couple suffered injuries in that incident. Electricity was knocked out and workers are repairing the downed lines.

Electricity was out in Springville and Heltonville. A trailer was reportedly blown over from the storm near Silverville. The occupants were able to get out without any injuries.

A gas line was broken near Guthrie Road and Old 37. Workers were called out to repair that damage. The Washboard Road area suffered a heavy amount of damage. Lawrence County Police along with Volunteer Fire Department workers helped in removing the numerous tree limbs that fell across the county roads. In one area, a backhoe was needed to remove a tree truck.

Paoli was not spared from the storm. The east side of the square suffered window damage. The Paoli Elementary school sustained roof damage. Many families were thrown into the dark and many mobile homes were tossed from the high winds. The American Red Cross has set up a relief center at Paoli Peaks and the Walmart Supercenter in Paoli has donated a large amount of food for those who became homeless. The Shoals Town Hall suffered roof damage when the storm rolled through there last night.
