Rare Grissom Dime To Auction On E-Bay
MITCHELL—A rare dime will be offered on E-Bay that has some local interest. The dime is one of a few that flew with Astronaut Virgil I. (Gus) Grissom into space in the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury spacecraft on July 21, 1961.
The Liberty Bell was lost at sea taking on water when the spacecraft landed.
In 1999, the Kansas Cosmosphere recovered the capsule and over $5.00 in Mercury Head dimes were found.
The company donated two of those dimes to the Grissom Memorial. One is being saved for display, while the other will be auctioned off as a fund-raiser.
The E-Bay auction will begin on March, 15, 2006 and run for 10 days. The minimum bid will be for $10,000. The dime has been unofficially appraised at $25,000.
