NASHVILLE—An initial hearing was held Monday in Brown County in the murder case against 61-year-old Michael Smith.
Smith was arrested Friday, more than two years after his wife, 55-year-old Linda Smith, was found dead in a hot tub at their home.
Prosecutor Jim Oliver says Smith called 911 around 3:00a.m. on Nov. 9, 2003, reporting that he'd found his wife unconscious in the tub. Oliver cites financial trouble as a motive in the murder.
When asked why the prosecutor's office has taken two years to file charges, Oliver says the delay is due to the seriousness of the crime. However, Smith's defense attorney Tom Barr says the delay is evidence the case against his client is weak.
Smith was arrested without incident Friday. Police are currently holding him in the Brown County Jail without bond.
