INDIANAPOLIS—Thanks to Bedford’s alert State Senator Republican Brent Steele, the unelected people at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management have been bombarded with mail.
Sean Gorman of the IDEM had started a rule-making process based on a handful of complaints from people who claimed the smoke emitted from outdoor wood-burning furnaces was injurious to their health.
Even as a Senator, Brent Steele had a hard time learning what was going on at the IDEM. Eric Koch, Republican State Representative says the proposed rules would have run contrary to Indiana's efforts to promote alternative sources of energy.
If you want to send in a comment the mailing address to Sean Gorman is as lengthy and complicated as any we've come across at the state level. The Bedford Public Library has it.
Brents' efforts have awakened a number of state lawmakers to this behind-the-scenes effort to possibly sneak through more state regulations. The IDEM has been forced to extend the comment period: the public response was phenomenal!
