Child Seat Safety Programs Saves Lives

Last updated on Wednesday, December 28, 2005

The BirthPlace of Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford is promoting a child passenger safety public service geared to protect Hoosier children’s lives on our highways and local roads.

The BirthPlace is establishing a permanent fitting station every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month beginning January 4th and 18th between the hours of 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.. This permanent fitting station will be staffed by nationally certified child passenger safety technicians who will inspect car seats and instruct families how to properly secure them in their vehicles. These technicians are; Amy Brown, Sandra Robbins, Tina Shaw, Amber Thorne, Sandra Brown, Brenda Pennington, Christy Cummings, Jodee Rhorer, Missy Ray, Carla Bailey, Dennis Parsley from the Bedford City Police Department, and Dustin Johnson from the Lawrence County Police Department.

The dates for future car seat fittings are as follow:

Jan 4th, 18th
Feb 1st, 15th
March 1st, 15th
April 5th, 19th
May 3rd, 17th
June 7th, 21st
July 5th, 19th
August 2nd, 16th
Sept 6th, 20th
Oct 4th, 18th
Nov 1st, 15th
Dec 6th, 20th

Statistics show that at least four out of five care seats are used incorrectly. Improper use of a child safety seat can lead to severe injury and or death. Parents and caregivers can call the BirthPlace at 276-1285 to schedule an appointment to have their car seat installation checked. Also, adults will be provided material and instruction on proper child passenger safety and car seat installation.

The Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving is funding this program with technical support provided by the Automotive Safety Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine.
