Rep. Bacon To Introduce Bill Requiring Seat Belt Usage On UTVs On Public Property

Last updated on Thursday, December 27, 2018

(STATEHOUSE) - State Representative Ron Bacon of Chandler will introduce a bill in the upcoming legislative session requiring the use of seat belts on utility task vehicles (UTVs), when on public property.

He is proposing that children be required to use a booster seat, like those used in a vehicle to ride on a UTV.

Rep. Bacon says many injuries related to UTV use are a result of seatbelts not being worn.

In 2017, Rep. Bacon co-authored Kate's Law requiring helmets for those under the age of 18 operating an off-road vehicle, unless for agricultural purposes.

Since enacting the law, there have been no ATV-related deaths involving Hoosier children under the age of 18.
He says although the current law seems to be saving young lives, there are still improvements to be made.
