Monroe County Fire Departments Purchase Equipment With Local Income Tax Funds

Last updated on Wednesday, December 19, 2018

(MONROE CO.) - Monroe County fire departments purchased needed equipment with public safety local income tax funds.

The Herald-Times reports, Ellettsville and Van Buren fire departments purchased 26 new self-contained breathing apparatuses -- air packs and face masks that allow firefighters to breathe and see while fighting fires.

The Van Buren Township department added thermal-imaging cameras to the face masks in 10 of their 26 units.

Ellettsville's new breathing equipment came with a $202,783.77 price tag. Nearly half the cost -- $96,647 -- will be covered by Richland Township's portion of the public safety local tax funds.

Tax funds will cover about half of Van Buren's purchase. The township received an allocation of about $80,000.

The Bean Blossom Township Fire Department also received tax allocations of more than $73,000 to spend on the breathing equipment in 2019.
