(BLOOMINGTON) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates about 59 percent of car seats and 20 percent of booster seats are misused in a way that could reduce their effectiveness in properly protecting children.

Before the holiday season and bad weather starts, get a free car seat check from Riley Physicians.

Riley Physicians are offering free car seat safety checks in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute in order to help increase public knowledge about car seat and booster seat safety for children. Call 812-333-2304 to sign up for an available time.

Each inspection can take 30 minutes and includes access to valuable information and resources to help keep children safe.

People interested in safety checks should bring four things to the appointment:
1. Car seat and vehicle instruction manual
2. The car seat
3. The vehicle
4. The child (preferred, but not necessary)

All children less than eight years of age are required by Indiana's child passenger safety law to be properly restrained in a federally-approved child restraint system. Once a child is big enough to fit in a seat belt properly, parents should still remember that the safest place for the child is in the back seat.
