Hoosiers Encouraged To Keep Safety In Mind When Using Winter Holiday Decorations

Last updated on Monday, December 10, 2018

(UNDATED) - Indiana State Fire Marshall James Greeson is reminding Hoosiers that unattended candles and Christmas trees placed too close to heat sources cause many home fires during the holiday season.

Greeson says artificial and real trees can catch fire so they should be placed at least three feet away from any heat source. He also says to consider replacing real candles with electronic ones.

And, replace older styles of lights with newer strings that are less likely to ignite nearby materials.

Other decorating hazards include traditional holiday plants such as poinsettias, which are poisonous to pets when eaten, and fragile and sharp decorations that can injure children when broken.
