Volunteer Income Tax Assistants Needed

Last updated on Wednesday, November 28, 2018

(BEDFORD) - For the past 11 years, local volunteers have devoted countless hours through the Local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly project.

Assistants for these programs prepare and then electronically file thousands of federal and state income tax returns at no cost to elderly and low-income clients in Lawrence and surrounding counties.

Additional volunteers are needed this year. Tax preparation sessions lasting 3-5 hours each are held 3-4 times weekly from early February through early April at the Bedford and Mitchell libraries. Some participants work all sessions while others volunteer just once or twice a week.

Volunteer tax preparers are provided training materials, online training, and access to tax preparation software in order to become certified by the IRS to prepare and file basic tax returns.

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact the Bedford Library at (812) 275-4471 or the Mitchell Library at (812) 849-2412.
