Last updated on Thursday, November 1, 2018

(HUNTINGBURG) - A Pike County man was found dead at the scene of a two-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on State Road 64 west of Huntingburg in Dubois County.

However, it isn't known yet if 87-year-old Emil Maier of Velpen died from injuries received in the crash or a medical condition.

Dubois County Sheriff's deputies responded at about 7:30 a.m. to the crash on State Road 64 near the intersection of County Road 650W.

Maier ran into the rear of a car stopped in traffic waiting to turn.

The two occupants of that vehicle, 40-year-old Lory Toby of Stendal and her 14-year-old daughter Kayla, refused medical treatment at the scene.

According to police, Maier had been eastbound on State Road 64 in a 2008 Chevrolet Impala when his car ran into the back of Toby's 2010 Dodge Avenger. Toby was also eastbound on State Road 64 and had stopped to turn left on County Road 650W. She was waiting for traffic to clear when Maier's vehicle hit her's.

Police said Maier did not brake prior to colliding with Toby's car.

The investigation is ongoing by the Dubois County Coroner.

State Road 64 was closed until 9:15 a.m. while the scene was cleared.

The Dubois County Sheriffs Department was assisted on scene by Indiana State Police, including a crash reconstructionist, Huntingburg Fire Department, Memorial Hospital Emergency Medical Services and Uebelhor and Sons Wrecker Service.
