(BEDFORD) - According to the 2019 Indiana KIDS COUNT® Data Book, the families, and communities in which children are born and raised heavily influence their future outcomes.

Children thrive in stable, nurturing families and supportive communities. Communities with strong social supports, adult mentors and afterschool activities help children thrive.

Friday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. you can attend a free presentation presented by Lawrence County YWC, Centerstone and Bloomington Meadows Hospital at Lifepoint Church at 1037 R Street.

This presentation will showcase the results from a county-wide survey to assess the attitudes and experiences of adults regarding mental health and addictions. Although many residents of Lawrence County recognize the impact of mental health and addictions in their community and are eager to be part of the solution, stigma towards mental health remains a significant barrier for many.

Attendees will:

  • better understand how a community is a context for child development;
  • learn about the community's attitudes and experiences regarding mental health and addictions; and
  • explore how community change can achieve efforts to reduce mental health stigma and promote wellness.

Speaker: John Keesler, PhD, LMSW, Assistant Professor, Indiana University Bloomington School of Social Work With a background in disabilities, workforce development, and trauma and trauma-informed care, Dr. Keesler teaches graduate-level social work practice and research courses focusing on mental health and addictions. Over the past year, he has worked with Lawrence County leaders and fostered student engagement to address the community's mental health needs.
