Free Training For Healthcare Professionals In Honor Of Great American Smokeout

Last updated on Tuesday, November 6, 2018

(UNDATED) - Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout event.

The annual event is designed to encourage smokers to use this day to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. By quitting - even for one day - smokers will be taking an important step toward a healthier life and reducing their cancer risk. In honor of this year's event, St. Vincent and Purdue College of Pharmacy are inviting healthcare professionals from across the state to register for the Rx for Change: Ask-Advise-Refer training.

St. Vincent will provide the training at no charge, for any healthcare professional in Indiana to help them advise their patients about the various resources available to quit smoking. In addition, participants will gain a better understanding about the impact of tobacco use on one's health, receive information on the proper selection and use of FDA-approved medications for quitting smoking, and will learn how to refer patients to the Indiana Tobacco Quitline (1 -800- QUIT NOW). Participants will also be able to take advantage of continuing education (CEs), networking opportunities with industry peers, and receive the latest information regarding tobacco cessation and treatment.

Per the CDC, "Tobacco use causes more deaths than alcohol, AIDS, murders, and suicides combined. It is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, yet it kills more than 11,000 Hoosiers every year. By bringing healthcare professionals together and educating ourselves about tobacco use, we have a better chance to save more lives in our communities."

The training will take place throughout the year across the state. Seating is limited and registration is required. For more information about Rx for Change training, contact your local St. Vincent Hospital.
