Smoking Blamed For More Than 12,000 Hoosier Deaths In 2017

Last updated on Thursday, November 1, 2018

(UNDATED) - More than 12,000 Hoosiers died from the complication related to smoking last year.

That's according to a new study released by the non-profit Fairbanks Foundation.

The report also said deaths from opioid use rose to more than 17,000 last year.

In all, the results say addictions cost Hoosier taxpayers $12.6 billion annually.

To help bring the numbers down, the foundation recommends increasing Indiana's cigarette tax by $2 and the legal smoking age to 21 and adopting programs to address addiction among college students.
