Orange County Marks 100th Anniversary Of End Of World War I

Last updated on Wednesday, November 7, 2018

(ORANGE CO.) - 2018 marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I and the Orange County Historical Society (OCHS) is honoring the observance with an upcoming Veterans Day event.

The Armistice Day event will be Sunday, November 11th at 2 p.m. at Paoli Courthouse. The event will include a wreath laying and salute by the Orleans American Legion Warren Brock Post #67.

The public is welcome to attend.

As part of the tribute state and national organizers of the World War I Centennial Observance are urging all churches, historical societies, and groups throughout North America to ring bells wherever possible at 11 a.m. this Sunday.

In addition to the Veterans Day ceremony, OCHS Robert F. Henderson says the Society has also created a new special temporary exhibit upstairs at the Orange County Museum, focusing on Orange County's links to the Great War. The rare artifacts were gathered or are on loan from private collections for this one-time exhibit.

The exhibit will be on display through the end of November.

"One of our newer members Taylin Allen has a gift for researching and has painstakingly transcribed a number of original letters written from WW I soldiers from Orange County back home," Henderson added. "These have been placed in a notebook with the exhibit for our visitors to view and read. Many of them are quite touching and poignant."

The Museum, located on the north side of the Paoli, is open to visitors Wednesdays from 1 p.m. until to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Other times available by appointment.

Admission is always FREE; however, donations are accepted to help with the upkeep of the facility.

The Museum will also be open to visitors on Sunday, November 18th from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. in conjunction with the Annual Paoli Merchants Open House. Everyone is welcome to stop in and visit the Museum during the event.
