Washington Soldier Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries After Bear, Rocks Fall on Him

Last updated on Wednesday, October 3, 2018

(ALASKA) - A hunter sustained life-threatening injuries after a bear he shot tumbled down a slope, dislodging rocks while hunting in Alaska’s Chugach National Forest.

Police say 28-year-old Specialist William McCormick of Washington, Indiana was hunting with Private First Class 19-year-old Zachary Tennyson in the area above Carter Lake near Moose Pass Saturday when it happened.

Police say the pair shot a bear above them on a ridge, causing the bear to roll down the slope, dislodging rocks as it fell.

McCormick was struck by the 200-pound bear and the falling rocks.

McCormick was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Anchorage where he is listed in serious condition. Tennyson was not injured.

The bear died from its injuries.
