An off-duty firefighter was the first to arrive at the scene and is credited with limiting the extension of the fire by closing two open exterior doors.

The department responded with four apparatus and 14 firefighters and had the fire under control by 6:26 p.m.

A dog and cat were rescued during a search of the residence. An additional injured dog was located on the front porch.
