Oolitic Town Council Tables Vote On 42 Percent Water Rate Increase

Last updated on Tuesday, October 30, 2018

(OOLITIC) - The Oolitic Town Council did not vote to increase the water rates Monday night.

Instead, the council decided to table its vote on the 42-percent increase to allow elected officials time to study if budget cuts and smaller water rate increases would help offset the spending in the utility department.

The Financial Solutions Group, a consulting firm based in Plainfield, conducted a water rate survey and says the water rate increase is long overdue.

The town buys its water from Bedford Utilities. Over the past several years, Bedford has increased what it charges Oolitic, but the town absorbed those increases without raising water rates.

Based on an average household consuming 5,000 gallons per month, the 42 percent cost would increase that household's water bill from $34 to $48.
