Last updated on Monday, October 8, 2018

(MITCHELL) - A Mitchell teen suffered an abrasion to his head after police say his Honda Civic possibly hydroplaned on State Road 60 West Friday afternoon.

According to a Lawrence County Police report,19-year-old Brady Howe was traveling east, north-east on State Road 60 West, west of Fleenor Road, when his Civic possibly hydroplaned going down a grade.

Police say the rear of the vehicle "came around" and Howe lost control of the car, then crossed over in the on-coming lane. The car then went off the north side of State Road 60 West and stared down a small embankment. The car collided with a mailbox, owned by Marty Edwards, went into a ditch, crossed over Edwards' driveway, and rolled on its side and continued to roll through the yard colliding with a tree before coming to a rest on the passenger side facing north.

Police say the car traveled approximately 137 feet from the roadway to where the vehicle came to a stop.

Police say the roadway was wet due to a recent rain shower.

Howe did tell police he was traveling around 70 miles per hour when the accident occurred. The posted speed limit is 55 mph.

Howe suffered an abrasion to the right side of his head and cuts and lacerations to his left arm and thumb. He was treated at the scene but refused to be transported to the hospital.

Assisting at the scene were AMR and St. Vincent ambulance crews, Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department, Mitchell Police Department, and Knowles Wrecker Service.
