(BLOOMINGTON) - Middle Way House is announcing its annual fall luncheon in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The luncheon will take place on Friday, October 19th at the Alpha Chi Omega House, located at 1000 N. Jordan Ave. Doors open at 11 a.m. for appetizers and a silent auction. Lunch will be served promptly at Noon.

Alpha Chi Omega will generously host and cater the lunch for up to 100 guests in order to help Middle Way House toward their goal of ending violence in our community. The event raises awareness and funds for the non-profit agency that provides a broad range of supportive and empowering services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking throughout six counties in southern Indiana.

Professor Dawn Johnsen is this year's featured speaker. Johnsen's talk, "2018: Year of the Woman?", will address the complex impacts of this year's legal and political developments on the status of women and women's rights in America. "For decades, Middle Way House has worked to provide alternatives to living with violence, empower survivors, and transform the political and social structures that support domestic violence and sexual assault," said Dawn Johnsen. "Dr. Ford's courageous testimony, countless #MeToo stories, and our own lived experiences leave no doubt about the vital, difficult work ahead--and the urgent need to support Middle Way House generously, with our time and donations," said Johnsen.

Professor Johnsen has taught constitutional law at the IU Mauer School of Law since 1998. She has also served as the Acting Assistant Attorney General heading the Office of Legal Counsel at the U.S. Department of Justice, on the transition teams for Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, as the Legal Director of NARAL Pro-Choice America, and as an attorney at the ACLU. She is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School.

The auction will feature items such as a week's stay at Chateau by the Sea, an ocean-front condominium in Cocoa Beach, Florida; tickets for Mariachi Los Camperos and Reversible at the IU Auditorium; a lifelong learning class from Ivy Tech Center for Lifelong Learning; two hours' rental of a 24-foot pontoon and four hours' rental of kayaks, canoe, or paddleboards from Lake Monroe Boat Rental; as well as two Bloomington Playwrights Project season subscription vouchers.

"We are incredibly grateful to Alpha Chi Omega for their long-standing support of Middle Way House, including hosting and catering this luncheon, and are honored to have Dawn Johnson join us as the featured speaker," said Debra Morrow, Executive Director of Middle Way House. "The topic of Dawn's talk is both timely and relevant to our mission," said Morrow.

The luncheon is sponsored by Applegate Consulting Group, an organization development (OD) practice that assists national and international nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and socially responsible for-profit corporations with developing human and organizational capacity and building a more just and equitable society. "I've been working for 30 years as a staff member and consultant with a range of women's rights organizations," said Beth Applegate, founder of Applegate Consulting Group. "It feels so gratifying to work in my hometown with Middle Way House, an agency that provides empowering services to all survivors," said Applegate.

Tickets for the event are $30 each or $270 for a table for ten and includes appetizers, lunch, and dessert.

Besides the luncheon, Middle Way House is recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month with their annual public art display of tree sweaters, Wrapped in Love. The sweaters are on display through March 15, 2019. The project represents a collaborative effort by the community to support survivors. Just as Middle Way House wraps survivors in love, a talented force of fabric artists lovingly wraps downtown Bloomington Trees in sweaters. Committed individuals and organizations sponsor the tree sweaters to help the agency fund meaningful alternatives to living with violence.
