J. Todd Spurgeon Inducted As President Of Indiana State Bar Association

Last updated on Monday, October 15, 2018

(FRENCH LICK) - J. Todd Spurgeon, a partner at Kightlinger and Gray LLP in New Albany, was inducted as president of the Indiana State Bar Association on Friday during the final day of the ISBA Annual Meeting.

An IU Maurer School of Law alumnus, who earned his undergraduate degree from Wabash College, Spurgeon is an experienced litigator with significant trial experience. He regularly appears in State and Federal courts, handling a wide range of insurance defense matters.

Some of Spurgeon's primary goals for his tenure include strengthening ISBA's relationships with Indiana's law schools -- partnerships he helped forge while on the Board of Governors -- and implementing the offering of health insurance for ISBA members and their firms.

"My aim for this year is relatively simple," Spurgeon said. "The ISBA will continue to strive to serve our members' varying needs and serve as the independent voice of the Indiana legal profession, and we will continue to work tirelessly to improve the administration of justice and promote the public understanding of the legal system. However, we will work to evolve to do those things better, more effectively, and even differently than they have been done in the past."

Spurgeon succeeds Andi M. Metzel, a partner at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP in Indianapolis. During her term as president of the Indiana State Bar Association, Metzel prioritized building better relationships with Indiana's legal institutions -- from courts to bar associations to the Indiana Bar Foundation. She also guided the organization through a period of transition, from a reimagined Annual Meeting to the hiring of new executive director Joe Skeel.

"I'm so proud of the work we've accomplished at the Indiana State Bar Association, and I can't wait to see where Todd takes us from here," Metzel said.

Metzel will remain on the ISBA Board of Governors as immediate past president. Leslie C. Henderzahs, a partner at Church Church Hittle and Antrim in Noblesville, assumes her role as ISBA president-elect, and Michael E. Tolbert of Tolbert & Tolbert LLC in Gary was elected vice president during Friday's member assembly breakfast.
