Last updated on Tuesday, October 23, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana University Police Department responded to a single vehicle accident Saturday evening involving a motorized scooter driven by a 20-year-old student.

Witnesses reported the scooter was traveling south on Fee Lane when the driver lost control and crashed near the intersection of Law Lane.

The driver struck his head on the road surface causing severe head trauma. He was not wearing a helmet.

Witnesses performed CPR until first responders arrived.

The driver was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital in serious condition.

The investigation is active and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

IUPD would like to share the following tips for riding scooters safely:

  1. Wear a helmet.
  2. Use common sense; scooters are motorized vehicles, not toys.
  3. Dress to be seen and do not operate at night.
  4. Share the road and never ride against traffic.
  5. Maintain a three-foot minimum distance from pedestrians.
  6. Watch the road for uneven surfaces and debris.
  7. Be wary of puddles and leaves that may hide potholes.
  8. Drive defensively.
  9. Keep your eyes up and one ear free so you can see and hear what's happening around you.
