Harvest Season Officially Underway - Slow Down, Pull To Side For Farm Equipment

Last updated on Tuesday, October 2, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Harvest season is officially underway, which means more slow-moving farm equipment will be on Indiana’s rural roads. To keep Hoosiers safe this year, state agencies are asking all motorists to be alert, patient and responsible, as they share the road with these large vehicles.

According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, farm equipment vehicles (other than trucks) were involved in 92 fatal crashes across the nation, with six of those occurring in Indiana.

By law, farm equipment must have the nationally designated slow-moving vehicle sign - a red triangle-shaped reflector - to warn drivers that their equipment is on the road. These vehicles often travel at speeds no higher than 25 mph.

Farm implements need additional roadway space, so be prepared to slow down, pull to the side or stop. Drivers in rural areas must remain alert to the possibility of encountering slow moving farm machines and be prepared to slow or stop to avoid a rear-end collision or striking a farm machine that is turning into a field or driveway.

Tips for Farmers and Rural Drivers:

The Indiana State Police want this farming season to be safe for farmers and motorists sharing Indiana roadways. Please be patient and courteous to each other when driving.
