Federal Grant Allows HAND To Continue To Provide Counseling To Homeowners And Tenants

(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington’s Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HAND) has received a $10,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to continue to provide comprehensive housing counseling services to households in Bloomington and Monroe County.

The federal agency provides funding to a nationwide network of approved Housing Counseling Agencies, to which HAND has belonged since 2002.

In the 2017-18 grant year, HAND provided housing counseling services to 173 local households. Among the services HAND provides are the following:

Home Purchase Counseling HAND's Home Buyers Club is a comprehensive educational workshop geared towards first-time purchasers. The program includes personalized one-on-one counseling as well as information regarding financial assistance programs that assist income-eligible applicants with downpayment and closing costs. Mortgage Default/Delinquency (Foreclosure Prevention) Counseling HAND provides personalized counseling to area homeowners at risk of foreclosure to avoid losing their home.

Reverse Mortgage Counseling HAND provides counseling sessions to help homeowners 62 years of age or older make an informed decision about acquiring a reverse mortgage to avail themselves of the equity in their home.

Rental/Tenant Counseling Housing counselors are available to discuss important considerations before applying for rental housing and/or signing a lease. Counselors are also available to discuss tenants' current challenges and offer advice toward resolving them.
