Commissioners Approve Structural Improvements To Juvenile Court

Last updated on Tuesday, October 30, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Kelsie Edwards requested permission from the Lawrence County Commissioners Tuesday morning to do structural improvements in Juvenile Court II.

Edwards says the court has applied for a $25,000 grant to make the needed improvements.

"Currently there is only one way in and out of the courtroom," she added. "This is a security issue."

The improvements would include making the second exit.

The commissioners approved the construction as long as the expenses are covered by the grant.

In other business:

---

The Commissioners renewed a contract with Tru-Green to provide lawn care to the county for a fee of $968.65. That fee does reflect a 3 percent increase from last year.

The Commissioners will allow Sheriff Mike Branham to take two forfeited vehicles that did not sell during the online auction to Bedford Recycling to be scrapped. Those vehicles a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix and a 2001 Mitsubishi Delica. Both have high mileage. The vehicles had a minimum bid of $200, but no one was interested in either vehicle.

Highway Superintendent David Holmes says all the mowing and paving are completed for the season. Crews are cutting brush by hand. The county's boom mower caught on fire Friday and was destroyed. The county is waiting to hear from the insurance company before replacing the piece of equipment.

Crews are also replacing culverts and ditching for next year paving projects.

Holmes is waiting to hear about a $1 million Community Crossing grant. If awarded the county will have to provide a 25 percent match.

Holmes had designs done for Bridge 172 on Cement Plant or Slaughterhouse Road and Bridge 170 on Williams Silverville Road over Indian Creek.

Work is also in progress on Bridge 170 on Stove Road.

Holmes is also thinking of seeking Federal Aid to repair Bridge 139 at Otis Park.

Treasurer Paula Stewart says everything is set for the first mobile home tax sale tomorrow. The sale will take place in the courthouse lobby at 10 a.m. There are currently 40 mobile homes with delinquent payments in Lawrence County. Stewart praised her staff for their dedication. Her staff drove to every mobile home on the list and placed notices on each home.

She also praised her chief deputy Rebecca McCracken for her dedication. McCracken is considered an expert in state bankruptcy. Now other treasurers are contacting McCracken for advice and training.

---

Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer says she is working on the county's capability assessment.

The Commissioners gave Auditor Jodi Edwards permission to place a donation table in the lobby of the courthouse through the month of November to collect needed supplies for the White River Humane Society.
