Board of Trustees Approve Designs for Buildings on Three IU Campuses

(UNDATED) - The Facilities and Auxiliaries Committee of the Indiana University Board of Trustees approved several items, including architectural designs for facilities on the Bloomington, IUPUI and Kokomo campuses, at today’s meeting on the IUPUI campus. Vice President for Capital Planning and Facilities Thomas A. Morrison presented the requests.

Beth Feickert, of IU News reports, the first of three architectural designs to be approved was the North Housing and Dining Addition in Bloomington. The new North Housing residence hall, along the east side of North Walnut Grove Avenue next to McNutt Quadrangle, will house approximately 700 students in a five-story, multibuilding complex with a variety of student and public spaces.

A central, open green space will be created between the housing buildings and the related dining expansion at McNutt. This green space will allow views of the nearby woodland landscape from both the residence and dining facilities. Smaller courtyards will also create spacing between the new residence complex and the existing buildings of McNutt.

Composed of multiple buildings that will step down in height from five stories to four, the new residence complex will use open portals for circulation between buildings, including multistory glass bridges on the upper floors. The nearby woodland landscape will be visible from double-height-glass floor lounges on the western side of the facility. The building exterior will include smooth-cut variegated limestone, tall lounge and bay elements, deep punched windows in a variety of sizes and arrangements, and protruding stone sills.

The related dining addition at the McNutt Central building will serve approximately 850 students in a variety of seating areas, with micro-restaurant-style venues on two floors. The façade will include the use of limestone ashlar veneer in the same pattern, color and texture to match McNutt. Large windows will afford views of the new central green space between the dining and residence facilities. Renovation of portions of existing interior spaces also will be included.

Along with the North Housing and Dining Addition, architectural design approvals also were granted for the Multidisciplinary Research and Classroom Building, known as the MDRCB, in Indianapolis and the Student Activities and Events Center in Kokomo.

The Multidisciplinary Research and Classroom Building will be a gateway building along Michigan Street at the eastern edge of the IUPUI campus. Situated between California and Blackford streets, this adaptable facility will be able to meet evolving teaching and research needs for programs in the School of Science, the School of Engineering and Technology, and the School of Informatics and Computing.

Space types include a state-of-the-art interdisciplinary research and lab space, a cleanroom environment, a maker space, and modernized classrooms and collaborative learning spaces. The three-story structure will be clad in limestone and metal panel materials similar to the Campus Center and the James J. Fritts DDS Clinical Care Center. A two-story glass curtain wall on the north side of the facility will create an open student study area facing Michigan Street, and three stairwells at the three main entries also will bring natural light indoors.

The new Student Activities and Events Center in Kokomo will serve as the central campus event venue for the Kokomo community and IU Kokomo athletic events, as well as various programs and activities for the campus student community. Southeast of Hunt Hall at the eastern edge of campus, the one-story building with a three-story-high assembly/gymnasium will include athletic offices, athletic training, and locker facilities, a large lobby and ticket area with concessions, a classroom/multipurpose room, and public restrooms.

Indiana limestone panels and cultured stone limestone panels will ground the building on its site and provide cohesiveness with existing campus buildings. Clear glass will combine high energy performance with neutral transparency, while the interior will be protected by extended overhangs and solar shading fins.

An update to the Bloomington campus master plan also was considered and approved by the trustees.

The IU Bloomington Subdistrict Master Plan refines the 2010 IU Bloomington Campus Master Plan to address development of three subdistricts that have grown since the plan's inception: Technology Park East, including the 10th and Bypass Area; Technology Park North, the area of the former Cyclotron Building, now known as Multidisciplinary Engineering and Sciences Hall; and the North Woodland area, the wooded area south of Memorial Stadium commonly used for football tailgating. The updates provide recommendations for future development of potential building and open space sites as well as transportation corridors.

Additional approvals included a multibuilding roof and façade project and a lease agreement, both for the Bloomington campus. Project approval was given to replace roofs at the Fine Arts, Radio-TV and Simon Music Library and Recital Center buildings, and make repairs and replacements to the façade of the Simon Music Library and Recital Center. The lease agreement will allow the use of space in two new buildings to be constructed on the current Crosstown Mall site on East 10th Street.
