Last updated on Wednesday, October 31, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police arrested a mother on Monday after a school nurse found bruises on her 7-year-old son.

Police arrested 27-year-old Kahlua Jones of Bloomington on charges of neglect of a dependent and domestic battery.

Jones' son went to his school nurse, Thursday, Oct. 25, complaining about a pain in his upper left bicep. The nurse noticed a suspicious-looking, large, red and raised welt on his arm.

The boy told school officials and the nurse his mother had whipped him with a Nintendo Wii gaming controller.

The school contacted DCS, and a staff member came to the school to interview the boy and take pictures of his injuries

After reporting the injury the boy missed the next two days of school. Jones told DCS her son was staying with relatives in Indianapolis, However officials believed Jones was hiding the child.

Officials locate the boy and took him to Susie's Place, a child advocacy center to be interviewed. During that interview, the child told officials he was injured fighting with another child. He then changed his story saying he was hurt after falling. Officials believe Jones coaxed her son to change his story.

In a later interview the child told officials his mom only whipped him with a big long brown belt.

He also told officials his mother would smoke marijuana in the kitchen with her friends while he watched television.

A Bloomington detective and DCS officials secured a search warrant for Jones' home. They didn't find the belt but did find the Wii controller and console hidden in a closet.

When questioned about the allegations, Jones refused to speak with officers and requested they contact her attorney. She was then arrested and transported the Monroe County Jail.
