Antonin Dvořák is best known as the first Czech composer to achieve worldwide recognition, but one of his most beloved works was composed right here on American soil. On Saturday, October 13, at 7 p.m.at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra will perform Dvořák's Symphony No. 9: "From the New World" as part of a program featuring works composed in the United States.

Dvořák wrote the piece during the years he spent in the U.S. in the early 1890s, drawing inspiration from the African American and Native American musical traditions to which he was introduced during his stay. The piece integrates elements from these traditions, such as the pentatonic scale and syncopated rhythms, with Czech folk music.

The BSO's program also includes two favorites by American composer Aaron Copland: Fanfare for the Common Man and Appalachian Spring. Written in 1942 to honor Americans serving in World War II, the immediately recognizable Fanfare has become an American anthem of sorts. Appalachian Spring, one of Copland's most popular works originally served as the score for a ballet choreographed by modern dancer Martha Graham. It won the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1945 and was later adapted into an orchestral suite.

The BSO will perform the original 13-instrument ballet score.

Tickets are available at the Buskirk-Chumley box office or online at bctboxoffice.org.
