Bloomington Flags to Fly at Half-Staff in Honor of George Taliaferro

Last updated on Wednesday, October 10, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Flags at all City of Bloomington facilities will remain at half-staff until sunset Saturday to honor local football legend and civil rights activist George Taliaferro.

Taliaferro and his wife Viola, a Monroe County juvenile court judge, were transformative Bloomington residents for 42 years.

"Hearts in Bloomington are heavy today after learning of the loss of a local legend, George Taliaferro. From his days as a student-athlete challenging segregation practice through his years as a civic and university leader, he changed the way people thought and made this community a better place for all who call Bloomington home, especially our young people. We send our sympathy to Vi and George's family," said Mayor John Hamilton.

The flags at the Indiana University Bloomington campus will also observe Taliaferro's passing by flying at half-staff until Sunday.
