Velpen Woman's Car Collides With Train Near Duff

(DUFF) - A Velpen woman’s car was crushed by a train at the railroad crossing near Duff on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a Dubois County Sheriff's report, 64-year-old Shelly Schwenk was traveling north on County Road 600 West approaching the railroad crossing around 1:45 p.m. when her 2015 BMW X4 was struck by the lead engine of a Norfolk Southern train.

Police estimated the eastbound train pulling three engines and 85 cars were traveling at about 35 to 50 miles per hour at the time of the collision.

Police say the signals at the crossing were working.

Schwenk did not suffer any apparent injuries, but was taken to Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Assisting at the scene were Memorial Hospital ambulance crew and Sternberg Automotive Group Towing And Recovery.
