(BLOOMINGTON) - This year's Griffy Lake deer cull might be in the hands of local hunters.

Since 2008, city officials have been looking for ways to reduce the deer population within Griffy Lake Nature Preserve's.

In 2014, White Buffalo Inc.'s cull was cut short when the season's acorn crop distracted local deer from the sharpshooters' bait. Another attempt in 2017 resulted in the culling of 62 deer.

Steve Cotter, natural resources manager for the city's parks department, told the Herald Times, the new plan is to use grants to hire White Buffalo Inc. to recruit, vet and train local hunters for a very limited hunt at the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources recently approved the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department for participation in the Community Hunting Access Program which helps municipalities address an overabundance of deer by allowing individual residents to participate in closely supervised hunting on public land.

The city may receive up to $16,250 in grants for this hunting season and another $16,250 for next season.

But before that can happen local hunting laws will need changed.

Tonight, the city council is expected to review an ordinance that broadens the use of firearms on publicly owned land.

If the city council chooses to amend local laws , this year's deer cull could take place during the first three weekends of deer hunting season on Nov. 17, 18, 24 and 25, as well as Dec. 1 and 2.
