(BEDFORD) - Relay for Life of Lawrence County is Saturday, September 15 at the Parkview Intermediate School track with new event hours; 2018 Relay for Life of Lawrence County will be from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m. in an attempt to improve event attendance according to MacKenzie Patton, Volunteer Organizer for Relay for Life of Lawrence County and Oncology Nurse at IU Health Bedford.
This year's event was also pushed from June to September for the same reason.
The 2018 Relay for Life of Lawrence County theme is "We Can Be Heroes and Fight Against Cancer." Patton said there will be everyday heroes at the event such as local policemen and firefighters.
Although this is only her second year being involved with Relay for Life, Patton is very connected to cancer through the loss of her mother and her work as an oncology nurse.
A new lap will take place this year called "Colors of Cancer" where participants will wear the ribbon color for the cancer they represent. Relay for Life of Lawrence County will be selling glow bracelets for that specific lap and luminary bags for the Luminary Ceremony.
Along with the new lap, Patton said she wants to see some other changes,"I would like to revamp the Opening Ceremony and Luminary Ceremony... My goal is to make it a more meaningful experience."
Relay for Life of Lawrence County has surpassed their fundraising goal of $35,000, but will continue to fund raise as donations help fund cancer research, patient care programs and can make a difference in communities like Lawrence County.
