(UNDATED) - Students attending schools throughout Indiana will join families across the world on International Walk to School Day, Wednesday, October 10th.
Walk to School Day is a global event that unites students across forty different countries on the same day to celebrate and encourage safe routes to school all year long. Students gather together and safely walk and bike to school to demonstrate the benefits of walking and biking as transportation options.
Health by Design provides support and technical assistance to communities throughout Indiana that are looking to increase participation and improve safety among students walking and biking to school. Health by Design is a coalition of partners working at the intersection of the built environment and public health, collaborating across sectors and disciplines to ensure Indiana communities have neighborhoods, public spaces, and transportation infrastructure that promote active living for all.
"Walk to School Day is always an exciting time for us," said Kim Irwin, Health by Design's executive director. "Many people live within a mile or two of school but never consider walking or biking as viable transportation options. There are also far too many people without adequate safe routes for active transportation. Celebrations like Walk to School Day create a wonderful opportunity to build awareness of safety, access and connectivity issues among parents, students and school personnel. Walking to school is also a fun way to build a sense of community and school spirit!"
There are currently 38 Hoosier schools registered for the 2018 celebration. Schools interested in registering should visit www.walkbiketoschool.org.
