Lane Restrictions Wednesday At State Road 46 At Arlington Road Bridge

Last updated on Monday, September 10, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - The Indiana Department of Transportation plans to restrict State Road 46 at the Arlington Road overpass beginning Wednesday while an engineering research team from Notre Dame University conducts a bridge beam deflection study.

Westbound State Road 46 right lanes, ramp lane, and right shoulder will be closed between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Westbound State Road 46's left lane will remain open to traffic.

Ramp access to northbound I-69/State Road 37 is being maintained west of the Arlington Road overpass. Operations on Arlington Road will require single-lane closures as needed; INDOT flaggers will be onsite to route motorists around these closures at the bridge. Inclement weather could postpone operations until Thursday or later.

Notre Dame researchers will affix patterned decals at critical locations on the bridge beam damaged August 21 when a manlift on a flatbed truck traveling westbound on State Road 46 struck the Arlington Road overpass.

Loaded tandem-axle trucks from INDOT's Bloomington Subdistrict will drive over the damaged bridge area while researchers record decal movement to chart deflections using equipment stationed on State Road 46.

The Notre Dame team will also measure deflections at an undamaged beam.

Meanwhile, contract documentation is underway for the development of an INDOT project to straighten the damaged beam at Arlington Road's bridge.

Until then, the east side shoulder on the overpass is restricted--keeping loads off the beam. Both Arlington Road lanes remain open to traffic. All of State Road 46 lanes remain open.
