Indiana Sheriffs Need More State Funds To House Level 6 Felons

Last updated on Tuesday, September 4, 2018

(UNDATED) - Indiana’s sheriffs say they need more state money to cover the costs of holding low-level felons in county jails.

Indiana's county jails currently get $35 per-day for every Level 6 felons they house. That apparently hasn't changed in 30-years.

The legislature may be asked to boost that payment to $55 per-day based on research by the Indiana Sheriff's Association. Such an increase is estimated to cost the state about $45,000 a year.

The number of Level 6 felons in county jails has increased about 37 percent in the last year.
