Fish-Shaped Weather Vane Atop Monroe County Courthouse To Get A Name

Last updated on Tuesday, September 25, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - A fish-shaped weather vane that’s been a fixture atop the Monroe County courthouse for more than 150 years will soon be getting a name.

The Monroe County History Center and county officials are holding a contest to name the weather vane as part of the county's bicentennial celebration.

The Herald-Times reports that children ages 4 to 14 were asked to submit possible names for the weather vane, which is a landmark in Bloomington. Those submissions were narrowed to six finalists.

Residents can vote online until 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 1 from among those names, which are: Gill, Finn, Hoagy, Bubbles, Cutter and Goldie.

County Commissioner Julie Thomas says the winning name will be announced Nov. 23 and the child who submitted the contest-winning name will get $100.
