Last updated on Friday, September 21, 2018

(SULLIVAN CO.) - Thursday at 7:46 a.m., Indiana State Police and Sullivan County emergency agencies responded to a motor vehicle crash on County Road 700 South, just east of County Road 300 East.

The crash injured the driver and claimed the life of the passenger, both county highway employees.

An Indiana State Police investigation revealed, a Sullivan County 2003 International 4200 highway dump truck, pulling an asphalt trailer, was eastbound on CR 700 S just east of CR 300 E; when the right side trailer wheels were believed to have traveled off the south side of the roadway, thus causing the truck to also travel off the south side of the roadway.

Samm was airlifted with possible internal injuries to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis by IU Health Medical helicopter, after a lengthy and rigorous extrication by Haddon Township Fire/Rescue.

A passenger in the truck, 69-year-old Larry G. Pigg of Dugger, was pronounced deceased at the scene by Sullivan County Coroner Mary Ann Dudley.

The crash is being investigated by ISP Master Trooper Polly Blackburn. Assisting are ISP crash re-constructionists from the Bloomington Post, Sergeant Kris Fitzgerald, Trooper Justin Bell, Sheriff Clark Cottom and deputies, Sullivan County EMS from Carlisle and Sullivan, Haddon Township Fire/Rescue, Sullivan County Coroner Mary Ann Dudley, Wabash Valley Correctional Facility Fire, and numerous bystanders assisted until the arrival of emergency services.
