Doing Research At The Library Of Congress Online And In-Person

Last updated on Friday, September 7, 2018

(UNDATED) - According to their website, the United States Library of Congress is the largest library in the world, with collections that include books, serials, manuscripts, maps, music, recordings, images and electronic resources. A portion of the materials are digitized and are available online.

For example, there is a collection entitled African American Photographs Assembled for 1900 Paris Exposition in their Prints and Photographs Online Collection (PPOC). When a researcher searches for a topic in the catalog they will find that the materials could already be digitized, only available at the library or a mixture of both. The following subject areas show how many items are available online or in the library only:

Rosa Parks
Items Available online: 13,603
All Items: 13,873

Baseball
Items Available online: 15,634
All Items: 29,623

John McCain
Items Available online: 113,760
All Items: 114,041

The items available online could be in a number of different formats, including webpage, PDF, online text, images, e-pub, audio and more.

A researcher may also find that the items they are researching could come from any country in the world, not just the United States, and that they could be in many different languages. There are more than 470 languages represented in the library's global collections.

When a researcher gets to the stage in their research when they decide that it's time to go to the Library of Congress in Washington D.C., they should check out the Visiting the Library page to create a plan to maximize their time. After all, there are three buildings full of materials to explore.
