Last updated on Tuesday, September 4, 2018

(BEDFORD) - Human Resources Director Brian Skillman asked the Lawrence County Commissioners on Tuesday morning to approve a contract with IU Health Hospital to conduct wellness exams for all county employees.

The contract was for $7,500.

There is no cost to employees to do the wellness exams scheduled for Nov. 13-15. The exams will take place in the conference room at the Public Defender Agency.

Lawrence County Highway Superintendent David Holmes says crews have been painting the inside of the covered bridge in Williams.

"The inside was covered with graffiti and we are trying to help them get ready for their dinner on the bridge on Saturday," Holmes says. "The tourism commission provided all the paint. Crews will be out there again on Friday to make sure to touch up any areas."

Commissioner Gene McCracken says the dinner, which is part of the county's bicentennial celebration, is sold out with 210 people attending.

Police will be making extra patrols this week to make sure vandals don't cause more damage to the bridge.

Highway crews are finishing chip and sealing in District 2 and plan to begin in District 1 on Wednesday.

Crews will begin paving Henderson Creek Road on Monday.

Bridge crews are working on the abutments on Bridge 66 on Tunnelton Dennison Road.

Sheriff Mike Branham says there are 189 inmates being housed in the Lawrence County Jail - of those 44 are females, 7 Level 6 felons, and 2 Department of Correction holds.

"The number of female offenders (44) is six below what we can handle," Sheriff Branham added. "We took 30 to court the other day and 13 or 14 were released and our numbers still remain high."

Sheriff Branham provided an ordinance to charge other facilities who use the county-owned firing range. Currently other groups use the range free of charge, with the sheriff's department paying for any maintenance or repair costs.

Sheriff Branham also provided the commissioners with an updated animal control ordinance. The new ordinance will allow the county to charge an owner a bond for housing an animal and if the fee is not paid within 10 days the animal will be forfeited.

"This is for livestock like horses," says Sheriff Branham. "It's hard for others to take these animals in and house and care for."

Sheriff Branham reported since Sept. 1, 2017 until today the county has received 1,251 animal control calls and 32 animal bite calls.

"That is an average of 3 1/2 calls a day," he added. "Our animal control officer doesn't work every day so that means officers are having to answer the calls she can't."
