(BLOOMINGTON) - Beginning on Monday, September 24, City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) plans to conduct a three-day distribution system test on the south side of Bloomington. This test will help CBU staff prepare for a water transmission main to be out of service during the construction of Monroe County’s Fullerton Pike road project.
In October, one of the two 36-inch water transmission mains that bring water from the Monroe Water Treatment Plant to the City will be taken out of service for two to four weeks. The pipe will be excavated and lowered to accommodate the change in road elevation at the intersection of Walnut Street Pk. and Rhorer Rd.
During construction, the City's second transmission main and Southeast Booster Station will deliver water to customers in the City of Bloomington and Monroe County. CBU plans to simulate the flow conditions that will be present during the construction period. No customers are expected to lose water service, but some may notice discolored water during and after the test period. In addition, the change in flow directions and pressure changes in distribution mains may cause water main breaks.
"CBU continues to work collaboratively with Monroe County to improve our transportation and utility infrastructure. This three-day test will allow us to identify challenges that may arise and to maintain high-quality service for our customers during the construction outage," said CBU Director Vic Kelson.
The testing will be conducted from September 24 through September 26. Changing flow patterns may loosen mineral scale from the interior walls of the distribution mains, leading to discolored water in customers' homes. The scale is harmless, but CBU recommends that customers run the tap until the water clears.
