(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington Commission on the Status of Children and Youth is seeking nominations for the 2018 SWAGGER (Students Who Act Generously, Grow, and Earn Respect) Awards.
These awards recognize and celebrate personal growth, generosity, and the development of respect. Successful nominees are students who show commitment to certain causes or display actions that have improved their lives and/or the lives of others around them. Educators, clergy, friends, neighbors, relatives, and others can nominate a student who lives or attends school within the geographical boundaries of the Monroe County Community School Corporation.
Nominations for the 2018 SWAGGER Awards will be accepted through October 5 for children and youth in the four following age categories: K-3, 4-6, 7-8, and 9-12. Nomination forms are available online at bloomington.in.gov/cscy or in the Community and Family Resources Department at City Hall (401 N. Morton, Suite 260), Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
"Young people in our community have raised their voices with special vigor this year," said Mayor John Hamilton. "We've seen extraordinary acts of principled engagement -- whether they're tackling school safety or taking care of their neighbors. In recognizing them, we hope to encourage them to continue to contribute to the greater good."
2017 SWAGGER Award recipients included a third grader who, instead of requesting gifts for her birthday, raises money for different organizations. Last year her entire school raised money for the March of Dimes. A Fairview Elementary School student was nominated by teachers and peers when, after learning to play the violin at Fairview, this student not only encouraged others to learn but helped them along the way. Other recipients included an eighth grader who refurbished laptops and donated them to Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for pre-teens and teens in foster care and a high school student who used his proficiency in Spanish as a volunteer for several non-profit organizations including Volunteers in Medicine. This student also organized a voter registration drive at Bloomington High School North.
All nominees are invited to attend a ceremony on Friday, November 9 where awardees will be recognized.
