(BLOOMINGTON) - The City of Bloomington and Dimension Mill Inc. (DMI) have launched a public contest to name a new street in Bloomington’s Trades District.
The new east-west corridor is being created between W. 10th and 11th Streets, directly adjacent to The Mill, the historic building currently undergoing adaptive reuse as the district's centerpiece. The 100-year-old former furniture factory will reopen October 31 as a coworking space, innovation hub, and venue for networking, professional events, and community use.
Members of the public are encouraged to propose names for the city's newest street, which will run west from The Mill's south plaza across the Trades District and connect with N. Rogers Street. Submissions are being accepted until October 1, 2018 at nameourstreet.com, where contest guidelines are also available. Each entrant may submit more than one street name suggestion.
Representatives of the City and DMI will select finalists from among the submissions, which will subsequently be presented for the popular vote online and through social media. The street name eliciting most votes will be submitted to the Board of Public Works and Common Council for final approval.
"The Mill is a unique opportunity for startups, innovators, and Bloomington's entire entrepreneurial ecosystem to come together for the benefit of all," added Brian Payne, the City's Assistant Director for Small Business Development. "Engaging with the whole community to put their imprint on the project is a great way to launch the Mill."
