Blue-Green Algae Found In Griffy Lake; Warnings Issued

Last updated on Monday, September 24, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana Clean Lakes Program has found the presence of the potentially toxic blue-green algae in Griffy Lake.

Blue-algae releases toxins during the growth process or upon its death that could cause animals who consume the water to fall ill.

The city's Parks and Recreation Department issued a precautionary warning to Griffy Lake visitors and required visitors to keep their pets on a leash to prevent them from swimming in or drinking from the lake.

Swimming in Griffy Lake is prohibited. Visitors who participate in boating activities, including paddleboarding, are advised to bathe with soap and water after coming into contact with the water.

The Indiana State Department of Health indicates fish caught in Griffy Lake during algae blooms are safe to consume, but nobody should use lake water for drinking or cooking.

More information about the toxin-producing bacteria is available online at www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/files/sp-BlueGreenAlgae.pdf.
