Last updated on Sunday, August 26, 2018

(CRANE) - Dr. Michael D. Griffin, Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, visited Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) on Thursday, 23 August.

Dr. Griffin was given extensive tours in NSWC Crane's mission areas of Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare that align with his top priorities, including: hypersonics, microelectronics, artificial intelligence/machine learning and nuclear modernization.

Crane has been a major contributor to Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD)-led hypersonic technology maturation initiative efforts for more than a decade and has become a critical engineering lab supporting Dr. Griffin's #1 priority.

"The department has realized rapid technological developments in advanced computing, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, autonomy, robotics, miniaturization, additive manufacturing, meta-materials, directed energy, and hypersonics," Dr. Griffin in a statement before the House Armed Services Committee. "These are the very technologies that ensure we will be able to fight and decisively win the wars of the future.

Dr. Griffin also saw Crane's vital role in ensuring the nation has trusted and assured microelectronics supply chains. NSWC Crane has been assigned multiple National Leadership roles in Trusted and Assured Microelectronics, and Dr. Griffin met the workforce leading in this highly specialized field. He toured the cutting-edge facilities that conduct research, development and test of advanced components, and he learned about the thriving defense ecosystem of industry, academia, and non-profit organizations making Indiana a driving force of innovation in this technology sector.

NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) with mission areas in Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare. NSWC Crane is responsible for multi-domain, multi- spectral, full life cycle support of technologies and systems enhancing capability to today's warfighter.
