(BEDFORD) - Fifty years ago the Bedford High School Band sealed a time capsule filled with letters that were sold in order to raise funds to send the BHS Band to the newly opened HemisFair in San Antonio, Texas.

"Aren't we very pleased with our ancestors that they had the desire to participate in this time capsule. I think they knew they were not only preserving history but they would be providing a whole lot of enjoyment for us today," said President/CEO of Radius Indiana and Lawrence county Bicentennial co- chair, Becky Skillman

Skillman and Kay Emery, Lawrence County Museum Volunteer opened the time capsule in front of a room filled with descendants eagerly waiting for their letters.

Shirley Ingalls kept the time capsule and the August 9th date alive for all the 50 years.

"We are so grateful she could be here today because we know how hard she worked on this project for a number of years," said Skillman.

The event was held as part of the Lawrence County Bicentennial celebration of which the theme is "Celebrate the past and chart the future.

Skillman revealed at the opening event that the time capsule will, again, be sealed for another 50 years. Envelopes will be sold for $25 at the the Lawrence County museum for those that would like to send a letter to the future.

The time capsule will be sealed on October 8 and not opened again until 2068.

"So, how many of us plan to be here at the next time capsule opening?" Skillman said as the room laughed.
