Rose Acre Farms Settles Lawsuit Brought By U.S. Department Of Justice

Last updated on Sunday, August 12, 2018

(SEYMOUR) - Rose Acre Farms Inc. will pay $70,000 after settling a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Department of Justice that alleges the company discriminated against work-authorized non-U.S. citizens.

Jordan Richart of the Seymour Tribune reports that the settlement stems from the department's lawsuit, filed Nov. 7, 2012, that contended the company was routinely requiring work-authorized non-U.S. citizens to present a permanent resident card or employment authorization document to prove their work authorization, according to a DOJ release.

The lawsuit was brought following a routine audit of the company's hiring practices between June 2009 and Dec. 22, 2011.

The settlement agreements stated the company "does not admit and expressly denies" the allegations.

The amended complaint also stated the company did not require specific documents from U.S. citizens, according to the news release.

The company, headquartered at 1657 West Tipton Street in Seymour, also will have to train employees on the Immigration and Nationality Act's anti-discrimination provision and be monitored by the department for two years, according to the settlement agreement.
