Perseid Meteor Shower To Light Up Night Sky This Weekend

Last updated on Wednesday, August 8, 2018

(UNDATED) - If storms stay at bay, you’ll be able to see the best meteor shower of the year this weekend.

The Perseid meteor shower will peak from 4 p.m. EST on Sunday until 4 a.m. EST on Monday, according to NASA.

The best window of observation is from a few hours after twilight until dawn, on the days surrounding the peak, Saturday and Monday.

Its peak this year will be less than two days after new moon, so moonlight won't interfere with the display. In a dark sky there may be as many as 150 meteors per hour, with 15 to 30 of the brightest ones visible each hour. Some will leave smoke trails that last several seconds after the meteor has vanished.
