Hoosier To Hoosier Sale Seeks Volunteers For Signature Sustainability Event August 18

Last updated on Tuesday, August 7, 2018

(BLOOMINGTON) - The 2018 Hoosier to Hoosier (H2H) Sale takes place Saturday, August 18 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at The Warehouse, 1525 South Rogers Street.

Since the first sale in 2010, H2H has diverted more than 510 tons of waste and raised more than $292,000 for local nonprofits and sustainability programs. A partnership between the City of Bloomington, the Indiana University Office of Sustainability, and Cutters Soccer, the annual one-day cash-only sale of used furniture, electronics, kitchen appliances, clothing, books, and more is open to the public at a $10 charge ($5 for IU students) from 8 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., with free admission thereafter.

From May through August each year, a volunteer network visits IU residence halls and off-campus homes and apartments to collect unwanted items and clean, repair, and sort them in preparation for the sale. Last year, the sale offered the equivalent of approximately eight semi-trailers worth of donations, which 300 volunteers had spent over 1,750 hours to collect and prepare for sale. This year, H2H is receiving volunteer assistance from AmeriCorps Team Oak 8. Individuals are still needed to ensure the success of this year's sale. Volunteers may register by clicking here.

"This event is an inspiring coordination of many acts of generosity performed by residents, students, businesses, and nonprofits," said Mayor John Hamilton. "It's a partnership that demonstrates how widespread our commitment is to the environment and to taking care of folks across the community. Bloomington works because so many pitch in."

H2H serves to reduce waste, increase awareness of waste issues, generate funds for local nonprofit organizations, and provide community members the opportunity to purchase home necessities at greatly reduced prices. Last year, H2H attracted over 2,300 shoppers and diverted an estimated 80 tons of waste from the landfill.

Revenues from H2H support sustainability programs for the City and IU, offer free soccer programs to low-income families and children with disabilities, and are also shared among approved partner organizations that provide volunteers to support the sale. Clothing, toiletries, and other items collected over the summer are distributed as in-kind donations to area nonprofits.

Free parking for H2H is available at two locations near The Warehouse. Parking directly in front of The Warehouse is reserved for people with disability parking permits and shoppers picking up furniture. A campus shuttle will transport IU students from McNutt, Eigenmann and Forest residence halls to The Warehouse six times during the day. The shuttle schedule will be posted at the following link: http://sustain.iu.edu/programs/hoosier-to-hoosier/index.php.
