Disabled American Veterans Mobile Claim Van At Lawrence County Courthouse On Sept. 27

Last updated on Tuesday, August 7, 2018

(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Commissioners voted this morning to approve a request by Lawrence County Veteran Affairs Officer, Brad Bough, to have the Disabled American Veterans mobile claims van on the courthouse square September 21 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Veterans will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis.

Bough says they are also looking for volunteers to drive the Veteran's Van to transport former soldiers to needed medical appointments at the VA Hospital in Indianapolis.

This is a free service for the veterans.

Many of our local veterans do not have the ability to make the trip on their own because of the type of treatment they are to receive, they do not have the ability to handle the traffic in Indianapolis, don't have family or friends who can take them, or just don't have reliable vehicles.

Volunteers have the option of what days they work and they try to schedule a week in advance. The problem is the process to get volunteers has become more time consuming and difficult, resulting in a dwindling of drivers to the point they are having trouble finding volunteers for all the days that service is needed.

If anyone is interested in helping a veteran, call (812) 275-6411 or stop by the Veterans Affairs office located in the basement of the Lawrence County Courthouse.

Bough also shared there are openings in the Indiana Veterans' Home. Bough says there is no cost to stay at the home.

Originally created to care for veterans of the Civil War, the Indiana Veterans' Home welcomed their first resident in 1896. Located on 250 plus acres in West Lafayette, the campus has transformed over the years into a thriving community of independent living and comprehensive care for veterans and their spouses.

Residents can enjoy the library and media center, gardens, crafts and hobbies, chapel, beauty shop, transportation services and a busy schedule of recreation and activities.

The Indiana Veterans' Home provides several levels of care for our residents:

Residents receive premier nursing care, with board-certified physicians and onsite specialty care, including:
